Random Events

Random events will be dealt out at each JN meeting. Two to four countries will be randomly selected and then a random number will be generated and the nation must address the random event associated with that number. Most random events involve a choice where the ambassadors must weigh the cost and benefits of the situation and decide what would be best. Some might choose to gamble, and yet others might choose to take the safe road. Many of the random events also affect other countries. Your decisions may make you some enemies or new friends. Choose carefully, and may luck be with you. Remember, the JN can always be asked for help, and resolutions can be a road to a creative solution to the event.

Below is the current list of random events and the choices available. All countries affected by random events have until the beginning of the next meeting to make their choices known and take action. (Note: Mr. Brunken reserves the right to change anything and everything about the random events below.)

Event Description

Oil! Oil has been discovered in a remote part of your country. This is great news for your country, however no one is sure how much oil is there and no companies want to make the initial investment to drill and pump the oil. Plus, your people don't want an oil company ruining their beautiful wilderness. Your government has a decision to make.

  1. Invest 1TP and 20RP into a drilling operation for a chance to harvest the oil. (60% chance of a 40RP return, 20% chance of a 30RP return, 5% chance of a 50RP return,  5% chance of a 60RP return, 10% chance of a 10RP return). There is also a 20% chance your people will protest if the oil is drilled.
  2. Allow another country to drill (paying the investment) for 15% tax on what they get. There is also a 20% chance your people will protest if the oil is drilled.
  3. Ignore completely
Protest = 20 RP problem

Oh snap! A deadly new disease has been reported in your country. The outbreak is so far contained to small, rural areas and the death toll is low. However, your health organization says if it is not contained, there could be a major epidemic or even a pandemic.

Oh snap! Young people in your country have taken to the streets in very large numbers in anger over recent business-friendly legislation in your country. They are blocking traffic, causing distractions, and even blocking the entrances to government buildings. They are demanding to be heard, but then again they are only kids.

  1. Viva la revolucion! Side with young people and force your government to repeal the legislation. This ends the protests, but there is a 66% chance businesses (that were benefiting from the legislation) leave your country for friendlier lands. You lose 15 RP and each country in your region gets 5 RP.
  2. Get off my lawn! Use the military and police to break the protests. It will cost you 10 RP to mobilize your forces and gives you a 66% chance of ending the protests. Plus, if you succeed in stopping the protests, there is a 50% chance that more businesses flock to your business-friendly country bringing 5 RP from each country in your region.
  3. Let's all be friends and negotiate. Who knows, maybe you will be able to agree to a compromise, and they will leave the streets peacefully. Maybe.. (75% chance strike continues)

Protests continue = 10RP due for the problem which increases by 10RP each week the strike is not stopped

War has broken out between two small countries in your region. While the conflict is mostly contained to those countries’ borders, the floods of refugees fleeing the war zones is causing a burden on your economy and others in your region.

  1. End the conflict with help of the JN (pass resolution in JN that gets the JN to invest 50 RP to send in a joint military force to bring an end to the war. 17% chance the conflict continues as an insurrection following the action)
  2. Care for the refugees no matter the cost for as long as it is needed because it is the right thing to do (20RP, 50% chance conflict continues)
  3. Put troops on the borders to stop the refugees from entering your land (15RP, other countries in your region must pay 10RP to care for the refugees, 50% chance conflict continues)
  4. Enough is enough. Use your military to invade the countries and end the war to force a peace. These countries have a combined MP total of 2. You must have a least 1 MP for this option. Victory allows you to end the problem and gain valuable resources and land worth 100 RP, but there is a 17% chance the conflict continues as an insurrection following the action. If you lose the war, you lose half of your wealth, and the conflict escalates.

Conflict continues = 10RP problem each week

What' that smell? Oh no! Heavy pollution (mostly from your neighbors in your region of course) has ruined some of your fresh water reserves. Now there is a water shortage in your country. What will you do to avoid a national health crisis?

  2. Buy water from other countries. Pay each country in the JN 5RP.
  3. Invest in better water treatment infrastructure. Pay 65 RP to build new pipes and water treatment facilities. Protected from water shortage problems and random events for the rest for the year. Must have at least 4TP to choose this option.
  4. This means war! Our neighbors have clean water and are polluting ours with their dirty industry. Move your troops in to take water reserves from other countries in your region. Same rules as war. All alliances are in effect. Must have at least 1 MP to choose this option. Winning the war gives you half of the wealth of your neighbors and protects you from future water shortage problems for the rest of the year (or until you lose a war).
  5. Write a resolution asking the JN to set up a World Food and Water Program that helps countries develop food and water security and help countries with these problems.
National health crisis = Pay 50 RP with a 66% chance of the crisis continuing (20 RP more for each week it continues.)

Extinction = 25RP loss due to international sanctions and a drop in tourism and possible punishment from the JN.

After a successful democratic revolution, a famous nuclear scientist from a neighboring country has come to you seeking freedom and protection from the new government of his home. He led this country's program to develop advanced rockets and nuclear weapons systems for his home country. The many tests done by the program caused the deaths of many innocent people and now he is wanted for crimes against humanity. What will you do with him?

  1. Send him to the JN to be put on trial for war crimes. This option keeps the scientist out of the lab one way or another. The JN awards you with a humanitarian award worth 10RP.
  2. Steal his research for your scientists and have him "disappear". 25% chance of scientific breakthrough. (must be a "Not Free" country to choose this option.)
  3. Put him to work on developing a Space Program for your country. This will require a 35RP investment. You have a 83% chance of scientific breakthrough, but also a chance the JN may punish you for protecting a war criminal.
  4. Put him to work on a new nuclear weapons program. This will require an investment of 85 RP. You have 83% chance of a military breakthrough, but also a chance the JN may punish you for protecting a war criminal to develop the nuclear weapons for yourself.
Scientific breakthrough = 5TP
Military breakthrough = 2MP

  2. Just buy some more food from other countries. Pay each country in the JN 2 RP. 50% the disease spreads.
  3. Do nothing and pray. The gods will save us. Roll a die and lose that number of AP and 10% * the number rolled chance of the disease spreading.
  4. Write a resolution to get the JN to invest 80RP in the research and containment of the disease. Lose 1 AP. 5% chance of disease spreading.
Disease spreads = All countries in the region lose 1 AP. 50% chance the disease spreads to neighboring regions.

A rich patriot in your country died and left his wealth to the country. What would you like to do with it?

The winner gets 60 RP plus 5 times the number from one roll of the die.

Countries in your region are all disputing the ownership of a small group of rocks…er…I mean islands in the ocean. Some say there are a lot of resources there and stuff.  The problem is no one can go get those resources without starting some kind of fight or argument. What will happen? Choose your course.

  1. Use international law to gain control of the islands. (Countries in this region can write a resolution and present their case to the JN. The JN will determine who owns the islands.)
  2. Give them to me or die! (MP or not, you can go to war over the islands. Same rules for war apply, all alliances remain in effect, but only the nations who wish to go to war over the islands have to fight. Only the nation who drew this random event can decide if war is allowed to resolve this issue. Winning the war = Gaining control of the islands and half of the wealth of the country or countries you defeat)
  3. Let’s all be friends. Everyone in your region signs a JN resolution turning the islands into a nature preserve. (no one gets the resources)

Win the islands = 60 RP

It’s amazing! No, a miracle! Your government leaders have stopped fighting long enough to pass some much needed reforms. Not only is your economy now humming along, but you look awesome!

You get 10 RP.

So, I’m sorry to tell you, but a while back your government invested in some reforms to help your struggling economy. Well, uh, those kind of turned out to be worse than the way things were. More like anti-reforms actually. It was pretty stupid now that we think about it. Anyway, sorry about that.

You lose 10 RP.

Because of a warming climate and a tide of refugees coming from tropical areas, a neglected tropical disease has made it to your country and is spreading. Fortunately, a pharmaceutical company in your country has developed a vaccine to help stop it, but they want to sell it a very high price. What will you do?

  1. I think I’ll just kill the scientists and take the vaccine. I am Dear Leader after all. (You won’t have to pay, but other countries won’t like you. 90% chance of success in selling the vaccine on the international market. Must be a “Not Free” country)
  2. That's capitalism. Pay the really smart, but not so nice company. It’s for the good of the people after all. (Pay 50 RP to protect your country from all mosquito-related diseases and a chance of success in selling the vaccine on the international market)
  3. Write a resolution asking the JN to pay the doctors 80 RP and develop and distribute the vaccine to all countries for free. (JN pays 80 RP, all countries are protected from bug-caused diseases for the rest of the year.)

International market success = Roll a die and get that much in RP from each country from selling it on the market, and all countries are protected from mosquito related illnesses one time. After that, countries can pay you the same value to protect them from mosquito problems in the future.

Due to increased demand for illegal drugs in other countries in your region, the manufacturing of illegal drugs has increased in your country causing an increase in violent crime, drug use, and drug trafficking across the border. What are you going to do?

  1.  It's just some drugs. Hire more police and send out the SWAT team to crack down on these drug dealers. Pay 30 RP to fix the damage and cover the police actions. 17% chance of failure and a resulting drug war between your government and the drug lords.
  2. I love drug money! Tell the police to back down and enjoy the bribe money. Get 30 RP in bribes and the drug trade continues for all countries in the region, but you lose one AP as drug plants take the place of crops.
  3. Send in the army! Use your military to destroy the drug lords' operations. Must have at least 1 MP. Drug lords have MP = 0. Victory ends the drug trade, but a loss results in a drug war and continued drug trade.
Drug trade continues = 10 RP problem for all countries in the region.
Drug war = Pay 20 RP each meeting until the problem is fixed

A rich land developer in your country has the bright idea to start chopping down your forests to sell the wood and develop the land into something more productive. Of course, those are national forests, so he needs your permission and a little loan wouldn't hurt either, you know, to boost the chances of success.

  1. Those forests are precious! Tell this guy no way, and threaten to send him to jail if he ever sets foot in a national forest again. No loss, no gain.
  2. Who needs forests anyway? Give the developer the ok to chop away. Gain 20 RP in tax revenue from the development, but 33% chance of protests.

  1.  Pay 15RP to repair the damages, and turn the site into a tourist attraction and get 10RP from the revenue.
  2. Pay 15 RP to fix the damage and donate the meteor to science for a 50% chance of getting 2 TP.
  3. Pay 15 RP to fix the damages and mine the heck out of that rock to see what resources can be found. Roll a die and get 3 times the value of your roll in RP.
21The leader of a rogue nation in your region has successfully tested a nuclear weapon and long range missile that could carry it 300 km to your country. Now she is demanding that your country end trade sanctions against her because they are hurting the country's economy and causing instability which could lead to revolution and civil war. Countries in your region are afraid of what this leader would now do with such a powerful weapon. It is a threat to peace and stability, and your people are afraid, but you know ending sanctions will really hurt your economy and would show weakness to this leader. What action will you take?

(Each time this Random Event is chosen, the range of the missile doubles and the nations affected increases.)

  1.  Oh well, everyone has nukes, right? No one ever uses them. We'll just ignore Supreme Leader Crazy. She's probably lying anyway. (No cost, 10% chance of civil war)
  2. End the sanctions. We don't want take any chances. (Pay 40 RP to cover economic losses and boost defence spending, 0% chance of civil war)
  3. We won't take this. No rouge country can be allowed to have nuclear weapons. Order a precision military strike on this country's nuclear facilities, missile sites, and leadership. Of course, you might miss and make things a lot worse. Must have at least 1 MP and 10 TP to choose this option. (Pay 25 RP, 60% chance of success (+3% for each MP over 1 that you have), 25% chance of civil war if success). Failure triggers the nuclear launch scenario.
  4. This means war! We will not stand to have a rogue nuclear nation on our border. Let's do this! Must have at least 1 MP for this option. The country has 4 MP. You and your allies invade the country to put an end to this government and its nuclear program, regular war rules apply. (Each ally pays 35 RP, 40-3MP% chance of nuclear launch against a country in range of the nuke, Victory = 250 RP from the country's wealth and ends the threat of this Random Event but creates a 25 RP occupation problem that must be solved to prevent civil war, Loss = you and your allies lose 50% of wealth and 80% chance of civil war)
  5. Seek help from the JN to arrange negotiations with the country to end their nuclear program to bring peace to the region. (Passage of JN Resolution triggers the Negotiation Event.)
Civil war = Country destabilizes, Choose to remain neutral (pay 50 RP to care for refugees and put your military on alert, 50% civil war continues, if war continues, nuclear launch scenario is triggered), side with the rebels (triggers option #3 or #4 above), or side with Supreme Leader Crazy (pay RP to end the civil war, 1 RP = 2% chance war ends, if war continues then Nuclear Launch is triggered).

Nuclear launch = 5% chance a nuclear missile is launched from the country (randomly targets a country within the range of the missile). Country hit loses half of its wealth.

Negotiation Event = The JN negotiates with a representative from the country to end the nuclear program during a JN Meeting. Success ends the threat, failure triggers Option #1
22A minority group that recently immigrated to your country has a lot of people feeling scared because the group wears some weird clothes, practices a strange religion, and doesn't speak the national language well. There has been some whispers that this group is evil and could be planning to do terrorist attacks, eat our babies, or worse, change the pure and perfect culture of our country. Your supporters are calling for action to be taken. What will you do?
  1.  The people are always right, right? We wouldn't want to lose the support of the masses. We'll pass some laws that will take away some of the civil rights of this group like not allow them to wear their strange clothes in public and require them to prove they can speak the national language before they vote or try to get a driver's license. (Pay 20 RP for a 65% chance your government stays in power and maintaining stability in your country, but risk anger and punishment from the JN because of your racist treatment of groups in your country.)
  2. Let's make our country great again! The only way to do that is to cut out anything that's not pure. Send in the army to where these "people" live. Round them up and make them all "disappear". After all, only humans deserve human rights. (Pay 40 RP for a 90% chance your government stays in power and maintaining stability in your country, but risk being charged with crimes against humanity by the JN for the abuse, torture, and murder of thousands of your people.)
  3. Send back to where they came from. That will solve everything, right? Send in the police and military to "ask" these people to go back to their native land. There's a civil war going on there? Oh, well, I'm sure they'll be happy to be back in their homeland. (Pay 30RP for a 75% chance your government stays in power and maintaining stability in your country, but risk anger and punishment from the JN for violating the human and civil rights of your own people. This option also creates a 20 RP refugee problem for all countries in your region.)
  4. People are people, no matter what they believe. This group may seem strange to many of us, but they are our countrymen and deserve equal protection and rights under our laws. I will make sure the police do everything they can to protect this group from attacks by the majority. That might mean hiring even more police. (Pay 30 RP, 35% chance your government stays in power and brings stability to the country, but you are nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.)
Stay in Power = gain 80 RP
Nobel Peace Prize = 10% chance to win 50 RP
